Description:
Serial #9D37798, 9mm Para., 4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This desirable revolver was designed to meet a French police requirement for a revolver firing the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, but without the need for half or full-moon clips. The design that S&W came up with uses a special extractor that locks into the cartridge's extractor groove and also has a hammer-activated stud that prevents the fired case from backing out and locking up the cylinder. This is an early production example that has a pinned barrel and retains 98-99% of the original blue with only some very mild silvering at the muzzle and a mild turn-ring on the cylinder. There are some barely detectable surface scratches at the right side of the muzzle and there are some brightly worn areas on the sides of the color case-hardened, short-spur hammer. The checkered S&W medallion grips are in excellent condition and have only a few very minor handling marks at the butt on either panel. The mechanism functions flawlessly and the revolver rates excellent overall. Despite the innovation exhibited in the design of the revolver, S&W did not win the contract and were forced to sell the revolvers commercially at a loss. These revolvers are highly prized by both S&W collectors and shooters for their novel mechanical features and this example would make a wonderful addition to any collection. FFL
