Description:
NSN, .58 Caliber, 36” round barrel with faceted breech and a fine, bright bore that has a few tiny spots of freckling along its length. This is a splendid percussion fowler that has a “BARNETT/LONDON/1884” marked lock with crisp “(tombstone – fox)/EB” stamp (E.&W. Bond) at the tail (the fox stamp is repeated on the London proofed barrel). The browned finish on the barrel has aged to a mellow plum color over time with streaks of underlying gray, becoming slightly more prevalent towards the breech. The lock and hammer have some sparse pinprick pitting in a few spots, but generally have a pleasant dark brown patina throughout. The iron trigger guard has the distinctive elongated bow of H.B.C. trade guns and the brass “dragon” motif sideplate has a dark yellow-ochre patina throughout, as does the brass buttplate. The pin-fastened, walnut stock is likewise in excellent condition with only scattered minor handling marks and small blemishes marring the excellent original finish. Some very attractive “tiger stripe” feathering is present on the buttstock and the unbound forend tip does not have any splits or chips. The mechanism is intact and functions flawlessly, however the ramrod is a later replacement. These percussion trade guns were made right up to the turn of the 20th century and these later “BARNETT” marked guns were probably named for Herbert Barnett, then managing director of London Small Arms Co. Ltd. Interestingly, L.S.A.C. Ltd. continued making trade guns of this pattern for the Hudson's Bay Co. until 1900 when the two companies parted ways. This is the finest example of a “BARNETT” marked, H.B.C. trade gun we have yet seen and it would make a stellar addition to any collection. {Ref. “Trade Guns of the Hudson's Bay Company 1670 – 1970” Historical Arms New Series No. 2 by S.
