Description:
NSN, 1.18” caliber at the muzzle with .68 caliber tube, 12” barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an interesting piece that has a flared brass barrel and a “T. KETLAND/& CO.” marked lock. The pin-fastened barrel has an overall dark ochre patina that lightens in tone just ahead of the breech and just behind the start of the muzzle flare. The lock has a generally dark gray patina with freckling throughout, as well as deeper pitting on and around the iron pan. The plain walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout with a with-the-grain crack at the nose of the forend, and later, resin-filled repairs at the barrel pins and barrel tang inletting (the original long barrel tang with rounded tip was broken off at some point and a rectangular, iron replacement tang braized on in its place). There is a transverse crack at the bottom of the lockplate and a further diagonal crack that runs through the unadorned brass sideplate. The original ramrod is still present which has a peened metal tip and held by a single unadorned thimble. The flat, sheet brass buttplate is a period replacement held by nine square-head carpentry brads, one of which was emplaced through the faint but legible inscription: “Timothy Mahony/March 5 1816/Halifax”. Interestingly, there is actually a record of a Timothy Mahony, originally from County Cork in Ireland (born circa 1770), who married a woman named Elizabeth Fitzgerald prior to moving to Woolwich in early 1800s. Timothy was employed as a carpenter by the military and through his government service, was eventually awarded a land grant in Quebec (200 acres for Timothy and Elizabeth, and an additional 100 acres apiece for their four sons; 600 acres in total). Timothy traveled first, sailing the ocean to Canada in late 1815 aboard the vessel “Eliza” with his family left in England until available berths for a crossing were secured. It seems that Elizabeth travelled aboard the “William Sibbald” in early summer of 1816 and was referred to in at least one article of government correspondence as “the wife of Timothy Mahony who is a carpenter at Halifax”. We don't know why Timothy stopped in Nova Scotia, possibly his services were needed by the local garrison, but the Mahonys did eventually end up in Quebec, settling in Leeds, Megantic County, almost due south of Quebec City and not that far from the Maine border (the blunderbuss was acquired in northern Maine). This is a well-used blunderbuss that was repaired several times over its life and proudly marked by its owner. It is an interesting piece of history and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
