Payment Types Accepted: Cashiers check, Postal Money Order Description: Late 1870s to 1880s Double hammer cut down shotgun, 18 inch bbls, 12 gauge. Stevens top lever double barreled shotgun with 18 inch bbls, checkered pistol grip with hard rubber end, hard rubber butt plate marked STEVENS diagonally. Bar action locks. Forestock is a period replacement held on by a combination of the original forestock bar and a single large brass screw. Forestock is worn down from looks like being carried tied to the saddle horn or a horse. Left lock plate marked J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO./CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. U.S.A. Markings are quite clear. Barrels are “steel,” not Damascus (this was a working gun) and have a smooth, even dark patina. The frame/lock plates have a slightly lighter patina. Center bar decorated with very thin lines. Butt stock is in very good condition with only normal handling marks. Forestock, as indicated, is worn down in the middle. Definitely a frontier cut-down job. The right bbl has a slight hack saw cut right at the very tip, as if the person doing the cutting went back about a 16th of an inch too far, sawed a couple of strokes, then thought the better of it and stopped. The slight saw mark has the same patina as the rest of the barrels. It needs a screw to hold on the right hammer. The one that was on it must have worked itself loose and I didn’t see it in the case it was in. You can get them from Dixie or other suppliers. Bore is shiny & fine, no pitting or dark spots. The sawed off shotgun was carried by many outlaws, lawmen and the cautious in the old west. Men that wouldn’t flinch coming up against a revolver or rifle would throw down their guns when confronted with a sawed off. (See “Triggernometry,” by Eugene Cunningham.) $25 shipping.
