Description:
This1861 Remington/Maynard Conversion Musket that was most likely produced for the Springfield Armory by Remington as a rifled musket and later, after the war, probably had the barrel reamed out to convert it to a shotgun.  The barrel was shortened by Remington to thirty-six (36”) inches with the wood stock ending about three (3”) inches above what would normally be the barrel band closest to the trigger.  There are no sights on the barrel.

Overall the condition is very good for its age, although the ramrod is missing and the strap swivel on the trigger guard has been removed, probably when the stock was shortened.  The stock has some minor dents and dings associated with use and 160 or more years of existence, but there are no significant cracks or other deterioration.  All screw slots are good.  The Maynard lock plate is fully operational. The nipple is good, the primer mechanism works and the door, with knob still in place, operates easily.  The bore is relatively clean but would need to be professionally reworked if the gun is to be fired.  No rifling can be visually detected.  This piece is not in original condition as it has been stripped to remove paint that had been applied sometime in the past.   All metal has had any rust removed and the cleaned metal “Browned” and oiled.  The stripped stock was stained and given a hand rubbed oil finish to restore its original appearance.

Markings on metal include: “Remington Ilion, NY 185(?) US on the lock plate, “U.S.” on the butt plate, “CB” on the short end of the trigger guard, “A” above “19” on the Barrel as well as some undistinguishable marking on the barrel tang above the number “23”.  Markings on the stock include two (2) unreadable cartouches on the left side flat area opposite the lock plate and boldly carved/stamped (in ½” high lettering) “A 4” above ”36” on one side of the butt and “4” turned sideways above “A36” on the other side.

Due to the restored condition, this weapon may not be desirable to a die-hard American Civil War Military Gun History buff, but none the less, it is a unique antique military weapon and has much visual appeal.  It would be very suitable as a decorative piece if added to a collection of antique weapons or maybe more valuable when used for parts.
