All original and complete Pattern 1766 Musket of .69 cal. with 32” barrel. Lock plate signed in script “CHARLEVILLE”. Confederate flat sided hammer without knurling on the ear. Classic drum with base plate conversion as pictured in Dr. John Murphy’s book “CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETS” on page 732, plate 10(bottom) and discussed on pages 729-733. Excellent all original and untouched. Still retains some of the plum brown finish on the butt plate, trigger guard and sideplate. Barrel with dark patina. Exceptional wood with the original finish. Small (5/8th inch) initials “O D” carved on the left butt at the butt plate. Has all the original parts and screws as converted and is in perfect working order. Even has the original Confederate button head ramrod. 60,000 flintlock muskets remained in storage in Virginia State Armories at the start of the Civil War including French Charleville Muskets dating to the Revolutionary War. These obsolete arms were all converted by contract gunmakers and state facilities to percussion in the first two years of the War and many were altered to musketoon for cavalry and mounted artillery use and were largely issued to Virginia Militia Cavalry regiments. This is the 3rd one we have had over the years and in the best condition of the 3. Very scarce Confederate musketoon in fine condition SOLD Antique: Yes |
