#4995 Colt 1878 D/A 5-1/2”x45COLT with Good bore (about a 5-6 on a scale of 10) with a Fair action being not holding on S/A, but working well on D/A mode and could use some tuning up and safety check by a competent gunsmith if it is intended for actual use. Produced in the 26XXX serial range and thus being made in 1889. Exterior retains about 50-6% original nickel coverage and the density varying from 0% on the cylinder to 70% on the frame and 40% barrel; the remainder being smooth deep brown metal with minimal pitting where the nickel is gone. Where the nickel is missing is a combination of wear and being flaked off …especially on the cylinder where it is entirely gone due to the old practice of cleaning by boiling the cylinder to remove the powder residue build-up. The barrel address is crisp and sharp, as is the serial number. The original hard rubber grips are VG with some wear to the right grip. (see photos). The very often missing lanyard ring is also intact. A relatively inexpensive big frame double action Colt in good to very good condition and being well worth some modest gunsmithing to be a good shooter. $895
