Description:
Winchester 1876 Semi-Deluxe Rifle in Caliber 45-75 WCF with 28" Octagon Barrel, Full Magazine, and Crescent Style Buttplate.  When introduced in 1876 at the Philadelphia Exposition, Winchester dubbed it their "Centennial Model".  This was the largest and final Winchester Model to use the original 1850's designed toggle link action which dated back to Smith and Wesson's pre-revolver days.  It was a fantastic gun and chambered some powerful cartridges for its day which made it ideal for hunting larger game from longer distances.  In this respect, it easily out-performed the .44 Rimfire and 44-40 rounds in the Winchester Models 1866 and 1873.  This one has a great look to it showing honest and careful use. This is a fairly early example; a 2nd Model in the 23,000 serial range that was made in 1882. Originally, this rifle was special ordered from the Winchester Factory with a Case Color Hardened Receiver.  Back in its youth, this would have been a stunning rifle with the bright case colors.  The colors have all but faded but there is still quite a bit of silvered-out remains of the original case hardening on the receiver. Most likely, it was purchased by someone who worked hard and could afford to pay a little extra.  This was a working rifle that someone took good care of, especially the bore.  Typical of most Case Colored Semi-Deluxe Model 1873's and 1876's, the Winchester Custom Shop stocked this rifle with walnut that had a little bit of extra figure.  However, these usually lacked enough burl or symmetry on both sides to grade officially grade as deluxe grade walnut.  All matching assembly numbers on the frame, stock, and buttplate.  Barrel Markings and Tang markings are Excellent.

Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Very Good.  When something is used and/or kept in a certain climate over a period of years, the metal and wood often age to those conditions.  That said, this 1876 appears to have been used out West in either an arid or cold climate with little humidity.   The wood is solid but has a lot of character in the form of open grain, lightness in color, as well as a bit of scabbard wear on the forend from being carried on horseback.  The metal has turned to a mostly silver to light gray showing very little patina with the case colors on the frame worn and faded to a silvery "coin" type finish.  The action is strong and the bore is Fine+ to Excellent.  Whoever owned this rifle cleaned the bore regularly which saved it from corroding from black powder residue.  It has great rifling and is still fairly bright. Most importantly, there are no rings or bulges.  The stocks have a few nicks and dings but are remarkably smooth overall and have never been cleaned or refinished.  Nice wood to metal fit with good squared edges.  Nice example of an early Frontier-used Model 1876 in the original 45-75 Caliber.
