Description:
Nice FILIPINA REPUBLICA 1898 marked belt dagger with Ivory handle.  The Filipine Revolution against Spanish Colonial rule began in 1896. In 1898, after Commodore Dewey defeated the Spanish squadron at Manila, and brought the exiled rebel leader, Emilio Aguinaldo back to the Philippines to lead the rebels in fighting the Spanish on land, Aguinaldo declared independence, establishing the first Philippine Republic on June 12, 1898,.  But the US decided to Annex the Islands, which became a US colony, then territory from 1898 to 1946.  This knife would have been issued in 1898 by the new Philippine Republic and likely used in the Philippine insurrection that followed US annexation.  The dagger is 15 inches long overall, of a thin spear point design, with a slightly raised midline. It tapers rapidly to a very sharp point.  The ricasso is marked FILIPINA/REPUBLICA/1898 and the obverse has a square w/ Philippine shield in it and a triangle below that with crossed swords over a foliate design.  The nickel-plated blade is 10-1/4 inches long.  Large brass hand guard w/ notched rectangular ends.  Ivory one-piece handle has a pattern of slowly twisting raised lines.  Brass bolster and pommel with loop.  The sheath has an intricate tooled floral pattern on the front and double row of light brown stitching on the rear.  Brass throat with belt hook attached to a loop on the back. Both knife and sheath are in fine + condition.
