Description:
The Ithaca Baker Model, of which this is a fine example, has a historic and unique place among American manufactured shotguns at the end of the 19th century. In addition to launching Ithaca as one of America’s premier and most enduring manufacturer of sporting arms, it was the only box lock among the top quality hammer guns. The Colt Model 1878, Remington Model 1889, LC Smith Models E and F, and Parker Brothers under-lifter and top-action hammer guns were all side locks. Ithaca made approximately ten thousand Baker Model shotguns between 1880 and 1889. This 10 gauge was manufactured in 1887. It shoots well. It also would be a good addition to the collection of not only Ithaca fans but anyone interested in the evolution of American shotguns during this period. To better preserve this gun for another century of use, the wood is properly reconditioned and the exceptional London Twist barrels refinished to reflect their original beauty.
Its 30” barrels have 3” chambers and are both choked Improved Modified (.025). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 058/.052/.053 and at the middle of the barrel is .052/.053/.059; the left barrel is .052/.048/.048 and .059/.052/.048, respectively. The exterior of the barrels is flawless as refinished. The bores are bright with some artifacts of light pitting. As one would expect of a gun of this age, the color from case hardening is gone, but the action has an appropriate patina and no pitting, dents, or scratches. The wood is attractive and solid. This gun weighs 8 lb 13 oz. The drop at the comb is 2” and at the heel 3-1/4”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the original hard rubber butt plate is 14-1/4”. The gun locks up tight and on face. All serial numbers, 6113, match.
The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired using low pressure shells produced by RST Corporation for Twist and Damascus barreled shotguns. However, as for any antique shotgun, and especially one a hundred and thirty years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.
