Description:
This is an iconic Remington Over Under Derringer in caliber .41 Rimfire. This one is fairly early, a Type I, 2nd Variant with the pre-1888 two-line address located atop the barrel. It reads "REMINGTON & SONS, ILION NY" followed by Elliot's patent on the second line. It has the extractor. There were only 14,000 of these built from 1868-1888. Following 1888, the company was sold and used the name, Remington Arms Co., until 1911. Being a Type I, it is definitely an antique. It has most of its original  nickel plated finish with blued appointments and standard checkered hard rubber grips.
Overall, it grades NRA Antique Fine+ with 93% original nickel plating intact on barrels and frame with numerous small dings mostly along the butt of the gripstrap and along the bottom of the lower barrel. Hammer, latch, and ejector show approximately 90% original blue. Remington Over/Unders are notorious for cracking around the hinge, especially the early ones. This one is perfect. The frame has a good solid hinge with NO cracks or repairs. Action works beautifully and both bores are respectable with good rifling and a few scattered pits which is common on these from the black powder era. The grips are in Very Good Condition overall. There is a very fine crack towards the bottom of the left grip that someone has repaired. It was so tiny that I nearly missed it. While the Remington Double Deringer was manufactured until 1935 and late examples in near pristine shape show up from time to time, this is an exceptionally strong example for an pre-1898 antique that was manufactured during the frontier era of the American West.
