This is a splendid pistol that has all matching numbers and retains 98-99% of the original factory blue that has silvered very slightly at the muzzle and along a few of the projecting edges and surfaces. The left side of the frame is crisply marked, “VON LENGERKE/& DETMOLD/NEW-YORK” within the rectangular cut-out. The bolt and large ring hammer have retained their original dull gray finish with some darker specks of freckling along the edges and projections. The safety, rear sight slider, and extractor retain about 70-80% of the original bright fire blue with the balance turned to gray. The trigger has about 60-70% of the original straw color remaining with the balance turned to a dark, pewter gray patina. The 23 groove walnut grips are both numbered to the gun on the interior and are likewise in excellent shape with only some minor handling marks and surface blemishes marring the otherwise excellent original varnish finish. The action is tight and the pistol is fully functional. The pistol is accompanied by its original, numbered shoulder stock that has scattered small handling marks across the otherwise excellent original oil finish and some dark plum freckling on the stock iron. Also included with the pistol is a packet of information from Griffin & Howe (current owner's of Von Lengerke & Detmold's records) listing this pistol on pg. 337 of VL&D inventory book 1. The pistol was one of 100 received on October 22, 1901, and was sold on December 13, 1901, to a “J. T. Williams” (the cost of the gun and stock – $25.00 in 1901 – was charged to his account). This is a superb example of a rare, documented, VL&D marked Broomhandle with original stock that retains a fabulous degree of original finish and rates excellent overall.
