Description:
WIDMANN HORSTMANN EAGLE POMMEL U.S. INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD CIRCA LATE 1840’S. 34” overall with 28” single edged, straight blade etched with floral and martial motifs. Ricasso stamped with a “KING’S HEAD” blade maker’s stamp and a “B” inspection stamp. Classic brass Philadelphia Widmann hilt decoration and scabbard engraving done after Widmann’s death and the purchase of the Widmann facility by William Horstmann in 1848. Designs remained unchanged but the Maker’s stamp on the scabbard now was “HORSTMANN” instead of “WIDMANN”. Untouched, uncleaned condition with dark brass patina. Blade dark but etching visible as is the “W.H. HORSTMANN/ & SONS/PHILADELPHIA” etched maker’s panel. Fluted bone grip which is somewhat loose but an easy repair. Mexican War era sword.
