Description:
Offered for your consideration is this fine Sharps New Model 1863 carbine that was originally manufactured as a breech loading percussion carbine during the Civil War. In 1867 many of these carbines were converted by the Army to fire the 50-70 centerfire cartridge and were used extensively by the U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars until they were replaced by the 1873 Trapdoor Springfield. This carbine has the 6 groove barrel that was specifically manufactured for the conversion, and is not the more common 3 groove relined barrel. Measuring 22 inches in length the bore in this carbine is absolutely mint, as new, sharp and mirror bright from chamber to muzzle! I rate it a solid 10 on a 1 to 10 scale. It has the original post & blade style front sight and the 800 yard Lawrence ladder stlye rear sight. The barrel retains full coverage of original blue in 95% condition, a few scattered speckles but amazing good condition for 149 years!  The "1863 New Model" barrel stamp is faint but legible. The "Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co" stamp is also faint but legible, see photos. The lockplate, breechblock, lower tang and lever retain much of the original dark case colors with protected areas showing more of the vivid case colors. The saddle ring and bar are present. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with minor handling wear but no cracks, chips or significant dents. The "DFC" inspector's cartouche is present on the left center buttstock. Additionally there is a small "C" stamp two inches aft of the lower tang, and a small "T" is stamped on the underside flat of the forearm just forward of the receiver. This Sharps carbine is in well above average condition than most you'll see, tight and mechanically excellent with original case colors and finish. It has seen little apparent use since reconditional in 1867. If you've been searching for a Sharps this one would be a great candidate for your collection.
