This is one of the first 10,000 or so USN Rolling Blocks which were subsequently rejected for having the rear sight too close to the receiver. The barrel has an overall mottled plum-brown patina mixing with smooth gray along its length up to some silvering at the muzzle which has a noticeable impact mark across the crown. Some light surface repairs were undertaken at the time, but the mark can still be seen along the right side of the muzzle crown. The frame has a darkly mottled gray patina with muted, but still visible, color case-hardening throughout. There are some further scattered spots of dark freckling on the hammer and breechblock, but with slightly brighter metal showing through. The walnut forend and buttstock are in fine condition with numerous handling marks and minor surface blemishes throughout the thick military oil finish. The cartouche on the left side of the wrist is still clearly legible and there are some linear bruises along the belly of the buttstock. The rifle comes with a correct metal ramrod and is a great example of a rather rare variant of an already rare naval rifle.
