Description:
Fox Sterlingworth 12 Gauge SxS Shotgun
6 3/4 lb LIGHTWEIGHT, 95% OVERALL

General Specs: Fox, Year 1932, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 12oz, Side by Side
Serial Number: 131769

Here we have a very attractive Fox Sterlingworth, sn131769 built in 1932 with all Philadelphia parts.  Weighing just 6 3/4lbs. and balanced dead on the hinge pin, she is the epitome of a fine handling, lightweight American double.  There are very few 12ga. American doubles that weigh less than 7lbs.  If you walk hill and dale for upland birds you will appreciate this a lot by the end of the day.  The gun shows nice, original and vivid factory case colors, so we had a top quality rust blue done to the barrels, restored the wood, recut the checkering, stripped the entire receiver down to its smallest parts and put the action through our Ultrasonic cleaner which removes all old oil, varnish, and debris from the metal.  We then inspected all of the parts to make sure they were in good working order, lubricated them properly, and reassembled the action and gun.  This is a $175 service that includes a 90 day mechanical warranty when you buy the gun.  I can't tell you how important cleaning the interior of an 84 year old gun is to its quality of function.  I can tell you that it is not likely that even one of the other Sterlingworth guns offered for sale on the internet has been cleaned since it left the factory.  The Fox Sterlingworth offers the very best value in a fine, vintage American side by side as it is the exact same gun as Fox's finest, minus the expensive wood and engraving.  No other American double compares in the reliability or function to the Fox, in my humble opinion and that of many other experts, including Michael McIntosh the famous author and fan of Fox guns.

The 28" # 3 weight barrels have 100% beautiful rust reblue, with 2 3/4" chambers, clean sharp lettering and stamps, choked M/F, no dents or dings, bore diameter a factory .730 both barrels, minimum barrel wall thickness of 26 thou right, 24 thou left, ribs tight, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, a beautiful set of barrels.
The action retains 65% vivid factory case color, perfect screws, action tight with lever right of center, crisp trigger pulls, the entire action was stripped, cleaned in our Ultrasonic cleaner, all parts inspected and improved, lubricated properly and reassembled.  The mechanics are perfect and warranted.

The wood is like new, with a newly applied Truoil finish.  The stock was removed from the gun, all old oil removed from the wood, then carefully sanded and prepared for 10 coats of hand rubbed oil finish, the checkering recut nicely, all pores filled completely and the stock looks like new!  LOP to factory butt plate is 14" (a vintage pad can be added to lengthen to your needs upon request), 2 3/4" Drop at heel, 1 5/8" drop at nose of comb, neutral cast for nice modern shooting dimensions.

This gun has been thoroughly gone over and is ready to be used for another 80 years in the field and clays courses.  The Fox gun is a superior side by side that has as good of action as any ever created.  With great barrels and wood, plenty of factory case color, perfect screws, this gun is a very good looking piece of American gun history.  This gun is owned by our head gunsmith.  Why gamble with an unknown because it is a few dollars cheaper?  Buy a gun that was the pet project of a gunsmith that works on them everyday and get a gun that is guaranteed to shoot and function properly and looks awesome for a few bucks more and buy in confidence!  Thanks for looking.
