Description:
Serial #984, .44 M&H, 7” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very rare, early First Model revolver that has the spring detent on the barrel release button. The metal has retained practically all of the original nickel finish with just a handful of barely noticeable flakes missing at the right side of the muzzle. The scoop-fluted cylinder, wedge-fastened barrel, and frame have matching assembly numbers: “695”; the “humpback” hammer retains about 90-95% of the original color case-hardening with the balance worn to a dark pewter gray, and the trigger has much of the original fire blue remaining. The mottled red and black hard rubber grips are practically new with little noticeable wear on either panel. Both panels are numbered on the interior, two digits away from the rest of the revolver's assembly numbers (“693”), but as the grip panel condition and numbers are so close to the rest of the gun, it is our opinion that the revolver left the factory this way. The fit and mechanics of the gun are excellent without any play or rattling, and the lock-up and timing are like new. The detent pin on the barrel release catch was a short-lived feature and very few Merwins are so equipped. This is a fantastic opportunity for a collector to own a rare open-top Frontier Army revolver variant in extremely nice, original condition. {Ref: “The Story of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.” by Art Phelps; 1992} Antique
