Percussion 62 Caliber English Sporting Rifle Caliber: 62 Barrel: 30" Note:  Made approximately 1830, this Woodward sporting rifle appears to be coverted from flintlock judging by the shape of the sidelock. The barrel markings show that it was made by George Woodward but the lock was made by Theophilus Richards, whose brother was William Westley Richards, whose business became Westley Richards Firearms of London.  This is a pretty rifle, nicely engraved on breech plug and barrel tang.  The sidelock has the early step design and is lightly engraved, as is the hammer.  The barrel shows a beautiful Damascus pattern and is slightly swamped at the muzzle.  The iron sights are set in dovetails for windage adjustment.  The barrel wedge is set in two silver plates.  The forend cap and entry ramrod pipe appear to be nickel silver.  The remaining hardware, triggerguard, buttplate, and patchbox, are all engraved iron.  The wrist of the stock is checkered and a small professional stock repair shows at the upper rear of the sidelock.  The action is crisp and the bore is bright with strong lands and grooves.  The gun appears to have been professionally varnished at some point.  This old girl is ready for the field or the den wall or both.
