Description:
This is a handsome sword that measures 37 1/2” overall, and has a 31 1/4” straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in very good condition much of the original factory polish remaining under scattered specks of dark freckling and the remnants of old protective grease. The etched panels have foliate scrollwork, “U.S.”, American eagle, and martial panoply motifs while the forte reverse is armory marked above the long ricasso: “U.S./Armory/Springfield/Mass.” The hilt is in fine condition with 85-90% of the original gilt finish remaining and a dark ochre tarnish on the underlying metal where it's been exposed. The black shagreen grip is lightly worn, but still in excellent shape with an intact braided wire wrap, and a non-folding type counterguard is present. The nickel scabbard has a frosted appearance along its length and the fittings are in very good shape having lots of the original gold wash remaining. This is a handsome, armory-made sword and is in very good-near fine overall condition.
