Description:
This is a classic basket-hilt broadsword that measures 39 3/4” overall with a 33” straight, double-edged blade having narrow, unstopped central fullers. The steel has an overall dull, pewter gray patina with evenly distributed areas of darker metal along the blade and scattered small spots of freckling near the tip as well as along the forte. The blade has 2/3 length etched panels with a typical thistle scrollwork motif framing the “(crown)/HIGHLAND/(hunting horn)/LT./INFANTRY” within the central panel on the reverse. Moving down the forte is an armorial crest (lion, sejant erect holding an orb), a motto: “ESSE QUAM VIDERI” (“To be, rather than seem to be”), and what looks like initials: “HCS”. The obverse has a very ornate entwined monogram, Prince of Wales crest, and an unmarked ricasso (although the blade is proofed with the Wilkinson “HW” mark) with Wilkinson serial number along the edge; 34024 (this serial number corresponds to the year 1896). The full basket guard and domed pommel are in fine condition with minor freckling and spotting throughout. The scarlet felt lining and crimson pommel tassels are very good shape with some minor insect damage, and the shagreen grip, which has an intact and tightly wound braided wire wrap is also in very good condition. The scabbard is no longer present. The Highland Light Infantry was formed in 1881 when the 71st Light Infantry and 74th Regiment of Foot were combined with the Militia and Volunteer Rifle units around the city of Glasgow. The regiment fought at Tel-el-Kebir in 1882 before shipping to South Africa for the Second Anglo-Boer War in 1900, winning honors at Modder River. This is a very good example of the single most iconic British military edged weapon, and dates to one of the most dramatic and compelling of her colonial wars.
