Description:
#4613 Winchester 1866 OBFMCB, 44RF, very early 3rd variation in the 27XXX range (1869). Very nice brass with no dings or repairs of mention, deep brown patina w/overall very fine surface roughness over most of the barrel, about like #600 grit emery paper …although perfectly smooth where the address is …and since the standard Winchester Repeating Arms address is excellent, one must assume it has been rerolled by some previous owner in the past, although the patina is even over the entire barrel. Fine crisp edges, factory sling swivels, brass nosecap and buttplate. Correct Henry style rear sight, early style “butterfly” lever latch, screwed in magazine plug, and early small loop lever style. The butt stock has had some epoxy repair at the wrist on the right side, left side looks OK except for a small line crack (see photo). The action is smooth and working fine, the bore is better-than-average but does have darkness in the grooves, scattered leading, and some minor pitting. Still, it should clean to at least a 6-7 and that’s not bad for a ’66 (….not that anyone is going to be going out and burning up a box or two of 44Rimfire cartridges!) The Model 1866 rifles are far more scarce than the carbines (about a 5 to 1 ratio of carbines to rifles) and this is a really decent and very early octagon barreled rifle. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. VG $8995
