Description:
Unique Colt Model 1849, serial number 238xxx, which was manufactured in 1863. This was a special order gun for a young union soldier, and has his name, Elmer E. Thompson, engraved on the back-strap. This is a 5 inch barrel, .31 caliber revolver, that has obviously been carried as a side arm, as many were by infantrymen in the Civil War. But it also has several features that are unusual to a standard Model 1849, and are normally found only on engraved or special order presentation guns. It has fancy, burl walnut grips, an adjustable, dove-tail front sight, and a “Sam L Colt” signature on the barrel in place of the standard address. The gun shows minimum blue finish, good color case-hardening on the frame and hammer, very good sliver on the back-strap and trigger guard, and excellent, original varnish on the grips. It is sharp and crisp, and has a very vivid cylinder scene. Elmer Thompson was a private in the 13th Michigan, which joined Sherman’s march across Georgia to Savannah in 1865. He unfortunately died in March of 1865 before he could return home. Copies of his muster rolls and history of the 13th Michigan Infantry are included.
