Description:
SOLD...Antique 1886 Winchester 45-70. Here is decent ole 1886 Winchester. It is in the very desirable 45-70 caliber. It has the standard 26" octagon barrel. It is in need of a better butt stock as you can see in the photos. Worm holes and initials. The S/N is  31355 and made in 1889. The bore has the common black powder roughness but NO rings or bulges and no big craters. Shows rifling all the way through. It shoots just fine with my cast bullet hand loads and would probably shoot even better with a jacketed bullet.. There are endless hand loads you can work up in this caliber if you are in the quest for pin point accuracy.  Mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects just fine. NO bulges cases and no backed out primers. The heads space is perfect... The metal is a smooth light to medium brown patina with NO pitting. The screws are all sharp and not all burred up.. There are some storage or rack dents along the barrel edges above the forearm as you can see in the photos. They are not vice marks. There are also some punch dot initials on the left side of the receiver. Hopefully you can see them in the photo. They are not very deep. Very hard to make out but looks like Frank DA if you look very closely. Probably Frank Daltons rifle ?????? Who knows. They have been there for ever as they are worn smooth to the touch. Has the original rear sight marked 1886 but it is missing the sliding elevator as you can see in the photo. The front sight is a very old period replacement. The butt stock has been shaved on both side with worm holes and also the initials FD on the left side that has been partially shaved away. Again, some ole cowboy named Frank DA has owned this rifle. The forearm is in good condition with dings and scratches and a gouge on the right side about an inch back fron the end cap. NO cracks or splits in the wood and actually fits excellent to the metal. Amazing !!!!! This ole 86 has a ton of character and I wish this one could talk... If you had a better butt stock would be a great improvement and would add several hundred dollars to the value.  BUT I would just leave it alone and keep it for a shooter. You would be throwing away a very important piece of history. Would be amazing if it was Frank Daltons rifle now would'in it.!!!! We will never know... Here is a very colorful 1886 in the perfect caliber that won't break the bank. You won't find one in this caliber with octagon barrel that shoots for less... Maybe I should keep this one for more research???? Call 765-728-8049 for more photos or any questions. $50 insured shipping. Thank you for looking.
