Description:
This rifle is a 1920 Weimar Republic re-work of a 1918 Danzig 1918 GEW 98. The Weimar Republic (as Germany was known post WW1) took rifles that were made/used during WW1 and updated them for use in the Reichsweir, which was the small military they were allowed to keep from 1919 to 1935. These rifles generally saw a lot of action as well as training use. Most were used in WW1, then served in the Reichsweir, then were used by the Nazis to train the military, then finally many saw use during the early stages of WW2 in the first invasions by Nazi Germany. After the K98 became more readily available, many of these rifles went to rear echelon troops and into training schools. Most of the examples you see in the U.S. today were captured during WW2 and brought back as war trophies. This Weimar re-worked GEW 98 was likely brought back by a soldier after WW2. It appears to have all the Weimar re-work changes except for the front sight being cut for a sight hood. The most obvious two changes to this rifle was the rear sight was changed out from the "roller coaster" type to the much lower profile base made for the heavier sS 8mm round adopted, and the receiver and bolt were blued. This rifle also received the new lower band which was wider, and the follower was changed to keep the bolt from closing after the magazine was emptied. One of the trigger guard screws was changed to the 3 slot locking type which is numbered to the gun, the other is un-numbered and has the earlier 1 slot. All of the visible original parts and the Weimar reworked parts are numbered to match the receiver and barrel with the exception of the bolt and the buttplate. It is very likely that these 2 non-matching numbered parts were in/on the gun when it was captured as the bolt has been blued like the receiver indicating it is a German re-work, and the butt plate has a matching patina to the rifle. Our research and experiance shows that VERY few of these will be 100% matching due to how long these rifles were in military service and when they were reworked, often there was no effort to re-number parts due to time constraints. We removed the handguard and it is un-numbered, we have not taken the rifle out of the wood. The sling is a nice looking reproduction. This is a very nice example of this historically important rifle at a great price for a nearly all matching rework!
