Exceedingly Rare & Important M1807 Springfield US Flintlock "Indian" Carbine, Regimentally Marked, .54 cal, mfg. 1808. One of only 1,202 carbines manufactured between 1807-1810 by order of the US Indian Department as gifts to friendly Indian chiefs. Very few of these carbines have survived today and they are recognized as one of the ultimate prizes among US martial arms collectors. The M1807 carbine is of great importance because it is the very first US arsenal made military carbine ever manufactured and the only firearm ever made by order of the government for the purpose of delivery to Native Americans. This example comes from an old West Point, New York, estate collection and is a very early production carbine dated 1808. Although parts production began in 1807, the first guns were not completed until 1809, making 1808 dated specimens such as this very scarce. The barrel measures 33 3/4" long and features a very small brass blade front sight. The breech is faintly stamped "P" over "V" with traces of "US" visible. The lock is marked "US" over an eagle motif over "SPRINGFIELD" with "1808" at the rear. The metal has a pleasing dark plum patina overall. Upon close examination there is a faint circle around the touch hole and two very old brass braze marks near the pan, visible when the lock is removed. These may indicate a re-conversion from percussion back to flintlock, however in our opinion the lock components are all original and match the gun's patina perfectly. These marks very well may be common repairs performed during the period of use. This is certainly possible considering that touch holes do burn out and enlarge over time, necessitating minor re-working back to proper size, and pans may loosen or crack from extensive use. The stock retains a very nice untouched and original patina showing moderate wear. The correct "US" cartouche is faintly visible behind the sideplate, and there is an "M" lightly stamped under the buttstock behind the triggerguard. A very interesting regimental insignia marking is carved into the left side of the buttsock in the shape of a leaf or arrow head. Inside are stamped the letters "M A / 2". I have yet to identify this marking but assume it may be a militia unit of some kind. There is a very faint 2" crack behind the barrel tang accompanied by a 3" crack which extends through the rear lock screw. Both are very old and quite stable. There is a thin 14" long sliver missing along the top left edge of the forestock with minor edge loss neat the muzzle. The right side of the forestock shows a few old chips with a repaired 4 1/2" crack behind the first ramrod pipe and a thin 3 1/2" sliver missing near the muzzle. Overall the wood has an honest and very presentable appearance. Original brass buttplate, triggerguard, sideplate, escutcheon, and ramrod pipes have a mellow, untouched patina. The buttplate tang is stamped "1808". Wood ramrod is original. The action is crisp and functions perfect. The tip of the frizzen spring is bent downward slightly resulting in a loss of contact between the spring and frizzen. This will be a relatively easy fix requiring the tip be heated up and bent back into correct position. The M1807 carbine is without a doubt one of the toughest martial arms to acquire and is usually absent from even the most advanced collections. This is a chance to own a truly significant piece of American firearms history. No FFL required on pre-1899 firearms.
