Description: You are looking at what is quite possibly a one-of-a-kind Winchester Model 55 takedown rifle in caliber 30 WCF. Approximately 22,000 to 24,000 Model 55s were made from the mid-1920s to the late 1930s as "replacements" to the Model 1894 rifle. They initially had their own serial numbers and then were serialized within the Model 94, so no exact figure can be placed on how many were produced. It is known that special orders were not encouraged by Winchester for this model, so any model 55 out of the ordinary is scarce. This one is serial #8261, manufactured approximately 1927-1928 (the barrel has an "8" where all the proof marks are after removing the forearm, so it's right with the time frame of manufacture). It has plain wood but was ordered with a pistol grip, style "I" checkering, and the super-rare Stainless Steel barrel. Any one of these features on a Model 55 would be rare, to find all three on one gun is like winning the lottery. Stocks are sound, just normal usage marks, no splits, no cracks, no extra swivel holes, never sanded or refinished. Checkering is still all there and in great shape. Takedown is tight and the bore of the stainless steel barrel is a 9.5 out of 10. Amazingly some of the "Japan" black finish still exists (95% of the stainless steel barrels have no finish left as the black "Japan" finish almost instantly wore away). Also, about 65% original blue still remains on the receiver (most have flaked and turned silver on these) and 85% bright blue remains on the loading gate. Half cock safety functions normally. Some rust on butt plate as rifle was sitting in a closet the last 40 years and only recently was removed from an estate in Montana. Guaranteed all original, right down to the sights - see pic of assembly numbers on upper left tang and receiver end of butt stock - standard rifles did not have these. The fit of the wood to metal is perfect and still proud, no doubt the stocks have been there from day one. Don't miss out on a piece of Winchester history!! Must ship to FFL or C&R holder. Will ship via USPS Priority Mail, insured, at no charge to the buyer. Payment via PayPal, bank check or money orders (sorry no credit cards unless you go thru PayPal). Thanks for looking!!!
