Amassed over decades by Osborne and Marie Klavestad the collection was housed in the museum pictured here and boasted hundreds of weapons , many of great fame and notoriety. The collection was sold in a single sale in 1978. Individual items have since been sold and this is number 136 as pictured and described at page 91 of the 207 page “The Stagecoach Museum Gun Collection.” An original copy of the hardbound book is included with the purchase of this weapon. German Wheellock/battleaxe combination weapon made about 1600. The Axe was a popular weapon for battle with a knight unseated from horseback. Combination Wheelock weapons were only made in small number due to the expense of production and they lost popularity with the advent of the flintlock. This Combination weapon is 32 inches long is is inlaid in bone with a dot and three leaf clover design above a handle deeply incised with a knight with sword and shield battling a knight with axe and shield; animals at their feet. There is a coat of arms as well above a rams head. The original museum tags remains in place and corresponds with the photo in the book. The wheel lock works by spinning a spring-loaded steel wheel against a piece of iron pyrite to generate intense sparks which ignite gunpowder in a pan which flashed through a small touchhole to ignite the main charge in the firearms barrel. Similar combination weapons are pictured from the famous Joe Kindig collection in the volume “Firearms Curiosa” by Winant at page 22.
