This is a wonderful and impressive punt gun, or "market gun" from my own collection. It is American made using an English proofed barrel and M. M. Maslin lock. Maslin was a quality lock maker who worked in Baltimore and later Philadelphia. The barrel is engraved "LONDON" and measures just over 50" long with a iron bead front sight. The inside diameter of the bore measures approximately .900" which I would call a 6 Gauge, or perhaps a very large 7 Gauge. The lock and large barrel tang are nicely engraved, with the lock being marked "M. M. Maslin". The metal has a very rich, dark plum patina overall. The stock is nicely figured and features a short, stocky butt with a thick checkered wrist. The LOP measures just 12 3/4". The wood has a very pleasingly worn and untouched patina. There is an old stable 2" grain crack near the lock screw with a fine 5/8" crack behind the lock. Otherwise the wood is sound with no other cracks, chips, or repairs. Engraved iron buttplate, triggerguard, and ramrod pipes. The triggerguard has a very old brass brazed repair and one ramrod pipe is missing. Wood ramrod is original. One barrel wedge and the forend tip are also missing. The first several inches of the ramrod rib just ahead of the forestock have come unsoldered. The action is strong and functions perfect. The nipple is a slightly damaged yet clean original. Included is a letter from a pawn & gun shop in North Carolina where I bought the gun. The letter notes that this gun was purchased by a Mr. Ralph Roberts as he was returning to his childhood home in Pennsylvania where this gun had been in his family for over 100 years. The gun was purchased by his great, great, great grandfather who used it for market hunting. A beautiful and impressive addition to any collection and a wonderful piece of American history.
