Description:
The Battle of Cool Spring occured on July 18, 1864, in the course of General Jubal Early's withdrawal from his invasion of Southern Maryland. It was not a Gettysburg or Sharpsburg, but it was still a "right smart fight", resulting in some 800 casualties. In brief, an overwhelming force of Federals had been dispatched under the command of Generals Crook and Wright to dole out some serious consequences for Early's embarrasing threat to the Federal Capital. They found Early drawn up on the west side of the Shennandoah River on the grounds of the Cool Spring Farm, near present day Bluemont, Virginia. The Federals launched multiple attacks across the River, where they engaged in fierce fighting with the Rebels. The Confederates stood their ground and the next day withdrew successfully up the Shennandoah Valley, together with a large wagon train of supplies captured in their invasion..

Decades ago, I visited the battle site, which is now part of the Holy Cross Abby and had the pleasure of meeting Brother James Sommers, the leading historical authority on the battle.  During his many years in residence, Brother Sommers had dug an incredible collection of artifacts from the battlefield (as well as an extensive collection of indian arrow heads and paeolithic artifacts).

Here are 4 collectible items relating to the battle. First, dug on site, there is a hard to find Confederate solid cast block "I" button in good condition. Secondly, dug on site,  there are two brass closure buttons, which were used to connect the shoulder staps on a soft knapsack, popular with both sides. Thirdly, dug on site, there is a primer for a field artillery piece. Finally, there is a a copy of the 69 page reference booklet on the battle, compiled in 1979 from Brother Sommers' years of research. It includes good detail and maps of operations by both sides.

Flat shipping in the Continental USA for this collection of items is $5.00.
