JAMES PURDEY SIDE LOCK
12 ga. 2-3/4 Chambers. 31" Chopper lump bbls are engraved “James Purdey & Sons Audley House, South Audley Street. London.” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel” on tops. Bbls are fitted with slightly raised, flat, matted rib. Gun is one of a pair, with “2” engraved at rear of rib. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1-1/4 oz of shot. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with matching serial. Beesley patent self-opening action features third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, arrow head engraved tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers. Action is engraved in typical Purdey house style well cut rose and scroll. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on each lockplate, and bottom of action is engraved “Purdey’s Patent”. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN at grip. Beautifully marbled and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock, LOP measures 14-1/2" over checkered butt to ft trigger. Stock features typical drop points and point pattern checkering at grip. 31" Bbls with 735" bores choked IC & FULL, balances beautifully weighing in at 7lbs 11oz as shown. The history of your Purdey gun is as follows:
SN#17706 was built in 1903 for F Merton as a 12-bore with 31” barrels, a top lever, pigeon rib and snap forend. LOP is 15 3/8” and weighs 8lbs. A hammerless Whitworth steel barrelled ejector shotgun non automatic safety, clip sides and 2 ¾” chambers.
