Description:
J & W Tolley .410 Bore Hammer Side-by-Side
TIGHT AND READY!

General Specs: J & W Tolley, Year Pre 1954, .410 Gauge, 4lb 2oz, SxS
Serial Number: 99765

J. & W. Tolley is an English gunmaker of some notoriety, mostly noted for large bore waterfowlers.  From about 1894 through 1903 they occupied a London address on New Bond St.  The earliest of the Tolley guns were not of the quality that they became in 1894 with their appointment as gunmakers to the King of Portugal and to the Persian Royal family.  These are not casual appointments, and the quality can be seen in their guns from the London address after 1894.   This little .410 is a bit mysterious, as it's serial number would indicate that it was made post 1950, but the action and trigger guard seems to be much older, likely turn of the 20th century.  My guess it was made before serial numbers were required, and then likely went back to be rebarreled sometime before 1954.  There are proof marks on the receiver that began to be used in 1904 and ended in 1954.  Same with the barrel flats.  The serial number seems to have been applied at a much later date, maybe even after 1989.  The gun was reproofed for magnum loads and 3" chambers post 1989 and the barrels remain unchanged in bore diameter and chambering since that proofing.  All that means the gun is in modern proof and safe for modern ammunition.  At 4lbs. 2oz. and balanced 3/16" ahead of the hinge pin, it is the definition of "a wand" in hand.  The 26" fluid steel barrels are choked IC/F and are in excellent condition.  If you have ever tried to find an English hammer gun in .410 bore you know how rare this opportunity is!  What a fun little gun to take afield or to challenge your skills on the clays course.  Thanks for looking.
