Description:
This is a nice clean example of an American Civil War Issued Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver.  Serial number is in the 137,700 range which dates its production to the latter half of 1863.  Most likely, it would have been issued sometime between late 1863 to 1864.  We looked through Springfield Research and not surprisingly, we did not find a match to this serial number as very few 1860's show up in the National Archives.  However, we did find a single Colt Model 1860, also in the 137,700 range, that was issued to Co. I of the 13th NY Cavalry in April, 1864. This one has wear indicative of cavalry use that was likely for a relatively short period of time. There is a bit of roundness to the right edge of the muzzle from the gun jostling around in the holster while the soldier was riding but nothing like you'd find a one of these issued in 1861-62.  From the looks of it, this saw about a year or less of war-time service. Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good with the metal turned to a smooth light brown patina with some traces of original blue in a few of the protected areas.  The grips have both inspector cartouches intact and various sub-inspector markings on the metal parts.  The cylinder has about 50% of the roll-engraved scene remaining and the worn mostly smooth from chafing in the holster...as though it were turned and stayed in one spot. Very Good Screws overall with still a bit of original blue showing on a few.  The serial numbers are all matching except the for the wedge which is an original but from another 1860...typical of Civil War usage.  Action is in great shape and the bore is Very Good+...still mostly bright with strong lands and grooves and some pinprick to light pits. No rings, or bulges. For a 150+ year old black powder revolver that went through a war, it is well above average.  Barrel fits tightly to the frame with no play.  Grips are solid with no cracks, repairs, or major chips.  Nice wood to metal fit and both cartouches visible.   A nice lightly used Civil War issue 1860 with pleasing aesthetics and should display quite well.
