Description:
You are looking at a Winchester Model 1886 with serial # 132306 in caliber 33 WCF. This rifle has a 24" barrel, 1/2 magazine, takedown frame and blue finish. It is equipped with straight- grained American walnut stocks with checkered pistol grip and forearm. The butt stock has a Winchester hard rubber shotgun butt plate. A Lyman hunting front sight is installed in the factory front sight ramp. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearm Records Office letter confirming all of the features on this rifle and showing shipment on October 14, 1904 (rifle, 24" barrel, 1/2 mag, takedown, plain pistol grip, checkered, shotgun butt, rubber, Lyman front and sporting rear sights all mentioned in the factory records; sheet will accompany rifle to purchaser). CONDITION: Very good. Barrel retains 70-80% thinning blue with some stains on left side and near muzzle. Sights are very good. Bore is bright with strong rifling, a 9.5 of 10. Receiver retains 30-40% blue with some staining on left side and carry wear. Lever and hammer show traces of case color in protected areas. Bolt retains 90% blue finish. Stocks are good and have normal usage marks/dings but no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, no extra swivel holes. Checkering is worn somewhat but still all there and in good shape. Assembly numbers on lower tang and upper inletting of the butt stock match. Pistol grip cap is very good. Hard rubber butt plate is very good with clear logo and sharp checkering. Most likely had a tang sight at one time as the tang screw is the proper one for mounting a sight, not the correct screw for standard stock mounting, and the plug screw is a replacement. Overall, this one is a good example of an 86 takedown rifle in a rare configuration.
