WINCHESTER LEVER ACTION TAKE DOWN RIFLE ... 32WS caliber ... 26" octagonal to round barrel with gold bands at the muzzle and chamber ... tube magazine ... weight 7 lbs 12 oz ... LOP 13" ... semi-buckhorn rear sight as well as Lyman locking combination tang sight & Lyman ivory bead hunting front sight ... color case hardened steel lever and hammer.
The gold plated receiver was engraved by John Ulrich in Winchester style #4. The right side shows a brown bear standing on an overlook and the left side shows two bull elk engaging in a territorial dispute with a forest background. Surrounding this is bold, dollar bill scroll engraving that continues to the tang, the top of the receiver, the forend cap and a small amount on the gold butt plate. The lower tang, under the lever, is engraved "Millard P. Duell" in script. The wood is AAAA quality, center crotch, flame grain American walnut with a crystal clear, high gloss finish. Beautifully executed, one-of-a-kind, hand carved floral scroll covers the pistol grip and 80% of the forearm.
This item comes with several Winchester Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Cody Firearms Museum letters dated 1971, 1982 & 2008 which identify this gun being received in the warehouse on March 27, 1907 and shipped out on the same day to fill customer order #93543. They also show a repair & return on June 29, 1917.

This gun is featured on page 627 of the "Winchester Book" by George Madis 1st edition. 3rd edition and later will not have these pages. Mr. Madis relates the story of how Mrs. Mae Duell ordered the gun for her husband Floyd. The base price was $28.00 but with all the options the gun came to a total of $173.00. Mr. Duell told his wife, "You paid too darn much for a hunting gun!" About the time the gun was returned in 1917, Mr. & Mrs. Duell's son, Millard, turned 16. Millard's name was engraved of the tang and this gun was his birthday present.
This is an incredibly rare, takedown, highest grade with just about every special order feature ever available. The gun retains 98% of the factory blue, action is crisp, hammer & lever retain their brilliant case colors, slight gold flaking on the top of the receiver, brilliant shiny bore, action is crisp and the wood has very few, minor finish scratches.
