Description:
For sale, a very nice Mauser Model 71/84 made by Amberg arsenal in 1887.  These rifles were all chambered for the 11x60mm cartridge and were the very first successful repeating military rifle for Germany.  The Model 71/84 rifle was basically similar to the single shot Model 71 Mauser but with the addition of an 8 round tubular magazine.  With many nations adopting magazine rifles in the 1880's, this was the German answer.  Paul Mauser had been working on developing this model since 1880, and in 1884 he was able to demonstrate it to the Kaiser at Stuttgart.  The tests were highly successful, and the rifle was oficially adopted on the 31st of January, 1884.  That is how it got the designation Infantry Rifle Model 71/84.  This rifle, serial number 27089, is in good overall condition and has not been refinished.  It has a very nice patina to it overall, with a blued barrel and the receiver left in the white just as it left the Amberg factory.  This model featured numbering on almost all of the parts and this rifle appears to be all matching except for the bolt and the magazine cap.  While the bolt serial number does not match, it appears to have been with the rifle a very long time.  It has the same level of wear and patina as the rest of the rifle as does the magazine cap.  The bore in this rifle is incredibly good.  The lands and grooves are bright and sharp.  This is rare in one of these rifles as the cartridge was black powder and very corrosive.  The buttplate of this rifle is regimental marked on the top tang,  It is stamped "B. 14.R. 7. 81."  Someone with experience deciphering these could tell you what that stands for.  This 71/84 is in 100% functional condition and could be shot if the new owner should choose to.  This rifle is a really neat functional piece of history and would be a great addition to any military collection.
