Civil War Confederate made McClellan style saddle very much like the example shown on page 91 of Confederate Saddles and Horse Equipment, by Ken R. Knopp. This saddle was among a collection inherited from my dad. He bought it in Aiken, SC in the 1970s-80s. This saddle looks exactly like the saddle on p. 91 of Knopp, which he describes as a western made Confederate Saddle, but this saddle also looks very similar to the “homogenized” Confederate McClellan saddles shown on pages 72 (bottom right) and 73 (“otherwise unidentifiable, plainly made McClellan saddles were manufactured all over the confederacy.”) In general form it appears similar to be a period McClellan, but with longer, square, Texas style skirts screwed to the side of the saddle with brass screws. A Stirrup slit was cut into the skirt in the English fashion. This saddle originally appears to have had straps just ahead of the fork and behind the cantle that angled down to a round cinch ring. These are missing from this saddle, revealing the leather directly tacked to the saddle tree behind the cantle and also the sub-layer leather in front of the fork. It is also missing the stirrup straps and stirrups and the cinch. This is the way it came down through history. These US made CSA saddles are very rare in any condition. Shipping and handling $75.00.
