Description:
Authentic Confederate saddle that looks exactly like that pictured on page 61 of Confederate Saddles and Horse Equipment, by Ken R. Knopp. The saddle is English rigged, like most CSA saddles, with a high cantle with medium sized brass tacks around the rim, just like that depicted on page 61. It also has the same forward sloping pommel (also with brass tacks), tacked seam between seat/skirts and horse hair pillow tic pad (with faded, light blue pin stripes). Knopp notes: “ This saddle, used by Marcellus Hooper of the 49th Tennessee, has features with similarities to several period civilian and military patterns.” Photo No 14 shows the same saddle in Knopp, page 60, but without the tacks. I sent photos of it to a woman expert in England and she said she thought it was made Ca. 1840s. She said it was most likely and English import, but noted that a few similar saddles were made in the southern states by skilled saddlers. My saddle is missing the stirrup straps but came with one very dark patina’d brass stirrup which looks like the English imported stirrups or the period, although I can’t say for certain that it is original to the saddle. The cinch is also missing. My father bought this saddle in an antique shop in Aiken, SC in the 1970s and I have inherited it. I mainly collect antique arms, so have decided to sell the saddle. This is a very rare Confederate saddle, same as depicted in Knopp’s book in every detail. $40 shipping USPS first class with tracking number. Will ship international.
