Description:
For sale, an antique Kentucky Half Stock Rifle in approximately .36 caliber in good/average condition.  This rifle is a really interesting piece.  When new it was quite the spectacular rifle with lots of hand laid inlays, engraving, carving, and detail.  It was most likely a flintlock converted to percussion in the mid to late 1800's.  The lock was made by "G. Goulcher", a prominent New York lock maker in the 1800's.  The rifle itself was signed on an inlaid brass name plate on the top of the octagon barrel but someone has scratched/rubbed out the signature to the point it is no longer legible.  What is legible however, is the patch box that has been engraved with the inscription "For Sulvin J. Wilhelm 1815".  It is written in old English style cursive and it is still very legible as you can see in the pictures.  This rifle has little inlays all over it.  There is a really nice engraved American style eagle opposite of the patch box along with some nice wood carving on the butt.  The stock has a nicely engraved wear plate on the forearm and lots of other nice features like the double set triggers.  The octagon barrel is34 inches long and has good rifling.  The overall length of the rifle is 49 1/2 inches.  This rifle has had a long and hard life.  The stock has multiple small cracks here and there and a dark patina but also has some beautiful figure in the wood.  Just a little bit of cleaning would really bring a lot of beauty out of this gun.  This rifle would be a wonderful decorator and conversation piece to hang over the fireplace without spending a fortune.
