#6408, Charles Lancaster, 151 New Bond St., London, Patent Breech Loading Hammerless Gun Ejector: A Charles Lancaster 12 Bore Side Lever Back Action Spring-Cocked (Beesley Design) Hammerless Sidelock Ejector Game Gun Made in 1890, Double underlugs with double bite, Top tang safety catch, It is with the original 30" Ejector Damascus barrels that were Nitro Proved in London at 3 tons with 2 1/2" chambers, Marked with the proper reproof marks, The bores at .731 .004 & .036" (Skt.I & Full), 2 1/2" chambers, 3 Tons Nitro proved, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .031" & .030" on the left; Inside the forend it is stamped T. P. Patent 2784, that is Thomas Perkes patent of 1889 for his ejector mechanism, This was the 343rd gun that patent #2784 applied to, Bushed strikers, Splinter forend with a lever forend release, Straight hand stock at 14 15/16 x 1 1/2 x 2 3/8" over a 1" leather pad with plugs for removal, Cast-off for the right hand, 7 lbs., Excellent wood with very nice color and contrast with deep black and brown color, 75% coverage of period engraving, The barrel browning remains at 75%, The wood has been professionally re-oiled and now at 98%, The metal is not proud anywhere, The checkering re-cut and now at 100%, The wood remains super stout in every respect, The barrels are excellent to near excellent plus inside and outside with a very slight ding at 9 & 3 o'clock on the right & left barrel 6" ahead of the breech, Looks to me it got caught up in a door, Not a problem at all as they are slight, The barrels ring with a very nice chime, This is a very nice Sidelever hammerless ejector piece that has modern London nitro proof on a very nice set of barrels, excellent wall thickness, very stout wood, great dimensions and it comes to the hand with ease, style and grace. It will take you into the field well into the 21st century. Here is the embodiment of 1890 Lancaster Quality. This gun epitomizes the hammerless gun in the early stages of its development. /////////////////////////////////////////// Charles Lancaster started in the trade in 1811 and set up shop at 151 Bond St. in 1826. He started as a barrel maker for many of the top end London makers including Purdey and marked them CL as these barrels are on this gun. He died in 1847 and his son Charles William carried on with the same interest in barrel making and was known for oval bore rifling. Their firm built quite a number of 3 & 4 barreled rifles and shotguns plus 580 four barreled pistols. They stayed as an independent firm until 1932 and were acquired by Grant & Lang at that time.
