Description:
#1436 Springfield 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, 45/70 with decent bore (6-1/2 to 7 on a scale of 10) showing medium wear but no serious pitting and still looking good enough rifling to spin a bullet. Tight action, 129XXX range, so dating in the early 1880s. This little Cavalry carbine is the standard 1879 variation with correct non-upgraded features. It has the 1873 dated (1879 style with the low-arch breechblock) and 1879 style rear sight, the correct smooth trigger, barrel, lockplate, etc. The metal is smooth thin grey brown with no pitting of mention and very good markings. The wood is VG with no serious deficits aside of the fact that the inspectors cartouche is no longer visible (although the “circle P” proof mark can be dimly seen just behind the triggerbow). It does have the cleaning rod set and broken shell extractor in the butt trap, and basically is just a very decent representation of the primary Indian War era cavalry saddle weapon, and is dated in the most turbulent decade of the Indian War period. VG overall. $1595
