Definitely an old unmarked (as to maker) blade, pretty heavily pitted but the pitting looking completely original, as does the entire knife …with the exception that it does look to have been regripped much later with stag slabs, as they are far too good of condition to be original to this knife. The brass cross bar is stamp embossed deeply on one side with “1861”; the other side with a lighter gang stamp “GA ARMORY” (or CA ARMORY) …but I do have some doubts as to whether that stamping is as old as the other 1861 stamp. It may have been done at some later time, possibly to pass this off as Confederate or early Californian, especially since there is no provenance whatsoever that accompanied the knife. However, if this DID HAVE some real good provenance, this would easily be a near $7000 priced knife, but as it is, it’s still a VERY impressive big heavy bladed knife and should be a really good bargain at $2250. (The 44 Starr revolver is just make a size comparison, it is NOT part of the sale.) SOLD |
