Description:
NSN, .45 Caliber, 30" octagonal barrel with a very good bore that has polygonal rifling very similar to the Metford pattern with noticeable freckling within the grooves. This is a lovely rifle that has a smooth and mellow plum-brown patina along the barrel with a sporting front blade and three leaf flip-up rear sight. Traces of the original twist patterning is visible at the breech-end with "JAS. BRAID KIRKCALDY" along the top flat just ahead of the platinum blowout plug equipped breech-piece. The breech and tang have light floral scrollwork engraving which repeats on the "JAS. BRAID" marked lock and hammer. The lock is tight and fully functional with a fairly recent replacement nipple installed. The nicely figured half-length walnut stock has an old added varnish over scattered small handling marks and bruises and is fastened by a single wedge with bilobate escutcheons. There is an ornately engraved triggerguard that has an overall plum-brown patina with double pineapple finial and tight floral scroll along the exterior of the bow. The checkering is still strong and the buttstock has some further light handling marks and blemishes including some noticeable scratches on the forend just behind the horn forend tip and an added ladder type sight on top of the wrist. The lightly freckled buttplate stands a tad proud of the wood at the toe and at the widow's peak. The gun comes with a period (but not original) brass-tipped wooden ramrod held by two plain thimbles (one with a sling eyelet) and a ridged tail-pipe. This is a handsome and well made gun that has classic British/Scottish lines and is in fine condition. Antique
