Description:
For sale, a first year production Remington Model 721 chambered for 30-06 in a custom Bishop stock with a World War 2 production Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope in a Paul Jaeger mount (Griffon & Howe).  This is one classic rifle package!   The Remington Model 721 was made from 1948 to 1962 and was considered a very accurate, well made rifle from Remington.  This example was made in the first year of production in August 1948 according to the date code on the barrel of "WTT".  At some point in the last 7 decades it was put in a full length, Mannlicher style Walnut stock made by the well known company Bishop.  This was likely done in the 1950's when the Griffon & Howe style scope mount by Paul Jaeger was installed along with the Lyman Alaskan scope.  The Lyman Alaskan scope is serial number 30,935, making it World War 2 production and collectible in it's own right as the proper vintage Alaskan for a M1C Garand sniper.  It has a 7/8ths main tube and is 2.5 power with the standard crosshairs style reticle.  As you can see from the pictures, everything is in excellent condition.  The only part of the rifle showing age is the stock itself.  It has some areas where the clear coat has come off and some dents and gouges from use over the years, but it is still very attractive.  A little TLC to the stock could remedy most of these areas.  The stock fits the rifle very well with a tight wood to metal fit that rivals that of a factory installed Remington stock.  It has a checkered black plastic butt plate with the Bishop label, a black plastic pistol grip cap, sling swivel studs installed, a Monte Carlo style cheek rest, and a blued metal protective cap at the muzzle.    The original Remington factory blue finish on the metal parts of the rifle rate a solid 96%.  The bluing still looks beautiful and it has been taken care of over the years.  The bore is pristine and bright.  The lands and grooves of the rifling look deep and sharp.  The bolt operation is slick and smooth.  The bolt has been jeweled and it is quite likely that the lugs have been hand lapped for such a smooth and tight lock-up.  The WW2 vintage Lyman Alaskan scope has bright, clear optics and the windage and elevation adjustments work perfectly.  The original factory blue finish is beautiful with the only thinning showing under the leather lens caps.  The Paul Jaeger/Griffon & Howe quick release scope mount works perfectly and locks on tight.  There is no doubt in my mind that it will return to zero each time it is removed and installed.  This is a real classic vintage American hunting rifle  in great condition.  It has just the right amount of custom touches to make it a unique, one-of-a-kind rifle.  This first year production rifle would be a great addition to any rifle collection and it would be great fun to take this classy rifle back into the field this Fall!
