Payment Types Accepted: Description: Gallager Carbine 16-26 Condition: Overall very good condition, brown gun with virtually no corrosion on bbl and frame a little on lock & patch box, has not been cleaned or buffed, lock is clean, and bore is very Fine with a little corrosion, works fine, nice for collector/shooter. Stock has usual dents, dings, scratches, and someone has carved initials JTF into left side serial# 9869. I have seen initials before on other Merrill’s. (16-26) $1,750.00 History: Gallager carbine made by Richardson & Overman, Philadelphia. Total quantity of about 17,728 + (5,000 chambered for 56-52 Spencer cartridge). 50 Caliber, uses paper cartridge with percussion ignition, breechloader. Single shot, the barrel sliding forward to load. 22-1/4” round barrel. Iron mountings: blue barrel with casehardened frame. Walnut buttstock with long iron patchbox (usually casehardened). Sling ring bar on left opposite lock. The Gallager saw extensive use during the Civil War. Among the many cavalry regiments with it were the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th Ohio, and the 13th Tennessee, and the 3rd West Virginia. Ironically, the inventor, Mahlon J. Gallager was from South Carolina. A number of minor variations were observed in trigger shape, sights, breech details, etc. Basic variants are: Early production Carbine: the lockplate marked: GALLAGER/PATENTED JULY 17th 1860/ (serial number-7017). Standard Model: the lockplate marked: MANUFACT BY/RICHARDSON & OVERMAN/PHILADELPHIA/ (serial number), and GALLAGER’S PATENT/JULY 17th 1860. I take Visa/MasterCard, add 3%.
