Description:
Serial #(series 23) 304, 7.7mm Arisaka, 26” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a Tokyo marked rifle with defaced 'mum that has a matching bolt and anti-aircraft sights. The metal retains 75-80% of the original blue blending smoothly with a dark plum-brown patina on the balance. There is some silvering at the muzzle and on the bearing surfaces and edges of the bolt as well. The top wrist tang has been cleaned to a dark gray color and has what looks like a G.I. service number stamped into it (“33617582” or possibly “33674582”). The first number belonged to Pvt. Earle W. Sutton, a metalsmith from Allentown, PA. Pvt. Sutton was an Army paratrooper and survived the war, passing away in 2009. Alternatively, the second number belonged to Pvt. Samuel F. Rizzolla of Pittsburgh, PA. Since the rifle was purchased in PA, one of them should be the correct owner. The stock and handguard are in fine overall condition with scattered light handling marks and minor blemishes throughout the original varnish finish. This is a very good-fine Type 99 overall.
