Description:
This is an original set of early Winchester Reloading Tools for the 1st Model Winchester 1873 Rifle and Carbine in 44 Winchester Center Fire aka 44 WCF & 44-40.  The other term originally used for this caliber was "Caliber 44 Frontier".  When the Model 1873 Winchester was introduced, most civilians were still using either muzzle loaders or catridge guns using un-reloadable rimfire ammunition.  As long as rimfire ammunition was readily available, this usually wasn't a problem but on the American Frontier where the nearest hardware store could be several hundred miles away, running out of RF Ammo could be a serious, even life-threatening problem.  The 1873 Winchester was one of the first rifles that used a new type of ammunition that was centrally primed....and thus reloadable.  This simple set of hand tools is what made it possible to keep a repeating rifle sustainable out West...hence the term "44 Frontier".  This isn't just a set of 44 WCF Tools, it is an early set from the 1870's.  The Brass Mold for this set is rare and difficult to find as they were made for a short time and were fragile compared to the later iron and steel molds. This one is in great shape with "44 W.C.F." stamped on both handles.  It has tiny assembly numbers on both halves of the mold.  The Model 1875 Reloading Tool is uncommon but not as rare as the mold.  Made of cast iron (hence the rough surface), they tend to survive.  This one still has about 20% of its original factory gold-paint...mostly in the protected areas.  The handle is stamped 44 WCF with the Oct. 20, 1874 Patent date crudely cast into the upper handle.  Early 44-40 ammunition came in two types....Berdan Primed and Boxer Primed.  This 1875 Tool is one of the ones that was equipped for removing Both Types.  Like most, the decapping pin is missing but the Screw-in Berdan Pick style deprimer is still present.  This would make a great acessory to an early Winchester Model 1873 Rifle or Carbine.
