Description:
#2086 Whitney Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle”, dated 1851 ( barrel date not visible due to pitting in that area), still in the original 54-caliber with the six groove barrel and having a VERY decent bore, about an 8 on a scale of 10! These handsome rifles were made famous during the Mexican War with their use by the future president of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, who commanded a small force in Mississippi. The Model 1841 rifle was used by Davis’ troops in the Battle of Buena Vista which saw Davis driving a superior force of the Mexican army from the battle field. Thus, these accurate weapons gained the name, “Mississippi Rifles” and became well known for their far, FAR better accuracy than the smooth-bored muskets of that era. This rifle is in considerably better condition than most that are seen; it has mostly smooth metal with decent lockplate markings, a fine bore, and almost no pitting except for the rear of the barrel and some light overall roughness. The wood is equally above average condition with just minor bumps and bruises and does still have a visible cartouche. The sling is an obvious reproduction but is the correct type, and the ramrod is possibly also a reproduction but also is the correct brass trumpet tip style. Definitely very good collection quality! VG+ overall. $1995 ......SALE!! $1895
