Bore is excellent - bright and shiny with sharp rifling but shows mild roughness in the grooves, mostly near the breech end. Action is excellent with perfect timing and lock-up in both DA and SA modes. Metal is about "Good" overall - the barrel and loading lever are near excellent with some rust spots on the side and top of the barrel at the muzzle and retain about 95% + finish. The frame is mostly pitted as is part of the backstrap and has drifted out to a dark patina and may have been touched up in spots - markings are visible and sharp The trigger guard is the uncommon early brass variation that was later changed to iron. The cylinder shows evidence of rust that has been cleaned and perhaps "toned" plus some mild pitting in spots - the serial number is visible and the nipples are intact and undamaged. Both frame and cylinder have a dark patina. The walnut grips show use, shrinkage, and some abuse, along with chips and dings plus damage from using the butt as a hammer - about 50% finish remains - the US Inspectors cartouches are easily visible on both sides, but are somewhat faint as is common on most of the martial Starrs. Only about 3000 of the 1858 Navy model were produced in Binghamton and Yonkers, NY between 1858 and 1860, but only 2250 were purchased by the government for Naval use. Most of these were discarded or destroyed, so those remaining with US markings are very scarce. This 1st year production 1858 Navy is pretty much all original except for cleaning, touch-up, and grip and has perfect mechanics, the early brass guard and strap and is quite rare due to low production and loss - nevertheless, it is in only about "Good" condition overall due to the condition of the frame, cylinder, and grips and certainly has seen service. At the same time, it is a good and essentially honest example of a very rare US Martial Civil War Starr that will make a great addition to any Civil War collection.
