Description:
Serial #253622, .45-70, 32 5/8” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves near the muzzle. This is a so-called “Model 1879” Trapdoor that was modified to Model 1884 specs and retains its 1873 marked, low-arch breech. The metal has a mixture of a mellow plum-brown patina with visible traces of original bright blue on some of the protected areas. The rifle is equipped with a Buffington rear sight and the breechblock has an overall dull gray patina but with a few traces of muted color case-hardening still visible. The lockplate has been cleaned to gray and has softened, but still legible markings. The walnut stock has a legible “SWP/1883” cartouche on the left side of the wrist and there are numerous small handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered throughout the re-applied military oil finish. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly, and an original ramrod is included. This is a handsome Trapdoor and rates very good-near fine condition overall. Antique
