Description:
Serial #49672, 10.4mm RF (.41 Swiss), 33” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This first type Vetterli was equipped with the pivoting loading gate on the right side of the receiver, but it was removed when the rifle was converted to Model 1871 specs. Likewise, the frame and lifter are milled for the almost universally absent cartridge lifter assist spring. The receiver has an overall smooth dark gray patina that mixes with muted color case-hardening on the balance, and brighter case colors on the area surrounding the now absent pivot for the loading gate cover. There is also some further mild silvering along the high edges and at the muzzle and the bolt, although correct, is numbered to a different gun on the body (the receiver, barrel, and lifter are matching). The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good shape with numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the added military oil finish yet the Swiss stamps are still quite crisp and clear. There is a stable, diagonal crack through the wrist on the right side, and the rifle is equipped with an original ramrod. The mechanism is tight and fully functional. This is a very nice example of an early transitional Swiss Vetterli and would make a nice representative example for a collection. Antiqu
